Frequently Asked Questions

What does a psychotherapist do?

A psychotherapist helps individuals navigate emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. Through conversations, various therapeutic techniques, and personalized support, therapy can help patients gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work toward meaningful change in their lives.

What’s the difference between therapy and counseling?

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but there are some distinctions. Counseling is typically short-term and focuses on specific issues or life challenges, such as stress, grief, or relationship problems. Therapy, or psychotherapy, tends to be more in-depth and explores deeper emotional patterns, past experiences, and seeks to develop durable strategies for long-term personal growth.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy can be beneficial for anyone, not just those experiencing severe distress. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling with relationships, self-esteem, or past experiences, therapy can help you gain clarity, develop healthier coping mechanisms, lay plans, and chart a way forward.

Do you offer telehealth/video sessions?

Yes! So long as you are located in New York State, and you have a quiet, private space in which to talk, we can work together via telehealth/video if you'd like. Of course, in-person sessions are available as well at my office.

How do I schedule an appointment?

To schedule an appointment, you can call my office at (845) 669-7060, e-mail me at anthony@ourjourneysi.com, or use the form on the Contact page - click here to be taken there.

What should I expect in my first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We’ll discuss your concerns, goals, and any questions you have about therapy. It’s also a time for you to share what led you to seek support and for us to determine a comfortable approach moving forward.  If you have had therapy in the past, we will also discuss what was and was not helpful during that therapeutic experience.

How long does therapy usually last?

The length of therapy varies based on individual needs. Some people find a few sessions helpful for specific concerns, while others engage in longer-term therapy for ongoing support and deeper personal growth. We’ll collaborate to find a timeframe that works best for you.

What if I feel nervous about beginning therapy?

Feeling nervous about starting therapy is completely normal. Many people experience uncertainty before their first session. You might worry about opening up, not knowing what to expect, or even wondering if therapy will help.  I strive to create a therapeutic space that is supportive and judgment-free in which you can go at your own pace. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin—just showing up is a huge step. If you’re feeling anxious, you can start by sharing those feelings.

Will I need medication?

Whether or not you need medication depends on your unique situation. As a psychotherapist, I focus on talk therapy, helping you explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to foster personal growth and coping strategies.  Some conditions—like depression, anxiety, or ADHD—may benefit from a combination of therapy and medication, while others can be managed effectively through therapy alone.  I work with Dr. Joann Paoletti, a highly experienced and board-ceritified prescriber.  She will meet with you to discuss if and how medications might be beneficial for you.
